According to official figures, Chile’s production of thermal energy has surpassed that of hydropower for the first time, according to a local news report.
Electricity generated by coal, natural gas and diesel represented 50 per cent of the generation mix on the country's Central Interconnection System (SIC), while hydroelectric power totaled 48 per cent.
The SIC system provides electricity to 94 per cent of the country’s population.
Experts believe the rise in the contribution from thermal power is due to the recent severe drought experienced by Chile.
According to Noticias Financieras, 2010 was the country’s driest year since records began.
